THEATRE : Designing A SHOW ALONGSIDE IT’s Writer, Creator and Lead Actor

Collaborating as the set designer with Gavin Creel for the world premiere of his show, WALK ON THROUGH, was a pivotal moment in my career. The challenge was to create a simple-yet-bold and powerful set that captured his unique experience of walking through The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The set needed to allow multiple levels for staging, areas for the band & grand piano, a catwalk upstage, and a larger than life surface to project beautiful pieces of art. From our very first design meeting, Gavin’s passion for storytelling and his infectious spirit set an inspiring tone for our creative partnership. His insightful feedback and openness to ideas transformed the design process into an incredibly rewarding journey. The atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration allowed me to effectively establish the shows’ visual tone alongside the projections, lighting, and costume departments. The creative team behind WALK ON THROUGH has truly become a family, and I will cherish the experience forever.

FILM : WORKING WITH A LEGEND

Every moment spent working alongside Kristi Zea has been a masterclass in production design. I have had the honor of collaborating with her on over a dozen projects, including Confessions of a Shopaholic, Tower Heist, The Watcher, and New Amsterdam. At the start of my career, Kristi stood over my shoulder and fostered my talent, while highlighting my own skills which gave me a seat at the design table. In return, I was able to introduce digital tools such as Photoshop and 3D modeling into her process; amplifying her work. Her guiding principles of doing quality research and allowing character development to drive a design, still inform my work today. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to contribute to her remarkable body of work.

TV : BUILDING TRUST WITH A DESIGNER

I met production designer Jamie McCall in late 2023 when she asked me to work for a few days on American Horror Story. Having never worked with her before, I needed to quickly understand how she preferred to convey her design idea. Within just a few weeks, we developed a unique shorthand that streamlined our creative process and expedited design decisions. In the end, to delve into a concept all I needed from her was a basic ground plan on a tiny post-it note and a key reference image. I'm proud to say that I’ve become one of her go-to collaborators for conceptual development. This partnership has not only enriched my creative journey, but has also deepened my appreciation for the art of production design.

LIVE EVENTS : being involved in every part of the DESIGN process

Transitioning from concept illustrator to art director on Grease LIVE! was an exhilarating journey that allowed me to immerse myself in every aspect of the production process. From the initial sketches to the final on-set execution, I was involved in shaping the visual narrative in a way that brought the beloved story to life for a new generation while cracking the design code for “LIVE” TV musicals. Collaborating closely with the entire creative team, I had the opportunity to develop the vibrant sets, storyboard transitional sequences, and define the overall aesthetic for the show. This role not only challenged me to think beyond individual illustrations, but also to manage and unify various design elements into a cohesive vision. Having an instrumental role for such a dynamic production was both a thrill and a privilege, as I witnessed firsthand how collaboration and creativity can transform a concept into a spectacular live experience.
